art on the couch

I was a guest on RADIO FOLKWANG, the podcast of the Museum Folkwang, and talked with Annika Schank and Sarah Bockting about the collection, psychology, art therapy, and mental health. We had such a good time that it quickly turned into two hours and two episodes. Listen in.

a podcast from the museum

Based on the collection presentation NEW WORLDS, each episode of the podcast takes up a special topic. Art scholars, artists, and art educators from the education and outreach team present works from the collection. In doing so, they address topics related to art and art science, about which much can be said, even without seeing the artworks. The aim is not only to impart knowledge, but also to take a personal view of the topic in question. Curators from the museum or external guests join in the dialogue. Music and texts read by actors complement the art observations and give the format a radio-like character.

Moderation: Sarah Bockting und Annika Schank
Guest: Kerstin Schoch (psychologist and art therapist)

This episode is about the relationship between art and psychology. We look at prints by Caspar David Friedrich and Edvard Munch and take a critical look at the topos of the artist as outsider, sufferer and melancholic. Our guest Kerstin Schoch gives an insight into the working methods of art therapy.

episode 21

Moderation: Sarah Bockting und Annika Schank
Guests: Kerstin Schoch (psychologist and art therapist) and Lisa Feyerabend (Student of the TU Dortmund University)

Even in the present, the human soul remains a theme in art: Arnulf Rainer puts himself in psychic states of emergency in his works in order to overcome cultural traditions. Photographer Sarah Jones evokes the atmosphere of psychoanalysis in her life-size images of therapeutic consulting rooms. But we also take a look at the possibilities of art therapy as an empowering strategy in this episode. Art therapist Kerstin Schoch is once again our guest and reports on current projects with which she wants to counteract the stigmatization of mental illness and advance transdisciplinary research.

Thanks to Annika and Sarah for the invitation and our great conversation!
